Congrats to the January Ultimate Fit Runner of the Month, Delia Flores King! She is from Philadelphia, PA. and moved to Evansville in 2000 after getting out of the Marine Corps. She has an 18 yr daughter who attends IUPUI and a 5 yr old daughter with special needs. She has been married for 5 years and currently works for the federal government. Here is a little more about Delia:
**What motivates you to run/walk? Today, I run for my own health, friends, and I love to eat. Oh and I also solve all the worlds problems. **How many races have you participated in? Oh gosh! Under my belt I have 3 full marathons, a dozen plus half marathons and countless 5K’s **What age did you start running/walking for fun & competitively? I started running in 2008. I was 34yrs old. Someone I knew said they had ran a half marathon. At the time I had no clue how many miles that was and thought to myself “self, if she can do then you definitely can do it”. There the fire was lit. **Favorite place to run/walk? It doesn’t matter. Wherever my friends are as long as it’s in the streets. Hate trails. **Favorite local race? Evansville Half Marathon. **Favorite race outside of the Tri-State? Marine Corps Marathon. You can just inhale the patriotism throughout the race. Tears were brought to my eyes when I saw the Marines in their dress blues on their horses or when I saw and heard Air Force One fly over me or when the runner in front of me had prosthetic legs and wore a shirt that said “fully equipped-assembly required”. Those are just a few moments. **Farthest you have traveled to do a race? Washington DC ** Favorite race distance? Half Marathon **Favorite race memory? My favorite memory was running 2017 Evansville’s Half Marathon as a 2:30 pacer. **Funniest race memory? 2016 Evansville Half Marathon I picked up my friend (whom I had been badgering for yrs to run) from her house. When arrived at the race and she got out of the car and walked over to my side I looked at her feet and she wasn’t wearing her running sneakers. She was wearing sneakers that were flat w no soles. All I could say “BLANK (leaving her name anonymous) WHERE ARE YOUR SNEAKERS?!?!” Oh my! Her 1st half. She was in pain for days. Needless to say that was her last. It wasn’t funny then but it definitely is today. **Craziest thing you saw at or during a race? I saw a barefooted man run a full marathon **Favorite pre & post-race meal/drink? Pre race meal is Pizza or chicken alfredo. Post race is coffee and a turkey burger w fries **What is your favorite brand of running shoe? I used to wear Asics or Muzuno. Last yr I went to Ultimate Fit to try on Brooks Glycerin. I tried on some Adidas Boost and have been in love ever since. My last pair are the Ultra Boost and they are heaven. Adidas=️️️. Thank you Ultimate Fit **How many miles do you run/walk a week? Depends on what I’m training for. Typically anywhere from 15-20 miles **What are your future goals for running/walking? I hope to run a sub 2 half marathon and beat Oprah’s marathon time 4:29:15 **Favorite time of day to run? Early morning. Preferably 5am **Favorite weather to run in? Winter. 30’s and 40’s **Music or no music? No music. I like to hear the pounding of my feet. Besides, music would only impair my judgements when solving the worlds problems.

Congrats to the December Runner of the Month, Erin Hobgood! She is an IU grad and from Evansville, IN. She got into running because of her dog in college – Mac, a Brittany Spaniel – over 10+ years ago. Since then she hasn't stopped, and even convinced her fiancé to a run a half-marathon with her. See below for more of Erin's story...
**What motivates you to run/walk? In the beginning, I ran to keep my dog happy. He loved running. Since then, I’ve learned to love running. It’s my time when I can unplug and focus on me and only me. **How many races have you participated in? 100+ **What age did you start running/walking for fun & competitively? I started running in 2007 but ran my first race in July 2010. It was Miles for Mom. **Favorite place to run? I love to run outside my door. Before we moved to our house, I ran the Greenway for a 5-mile loop. Now I run by Washington, Bosse, Memorial, and UE. If you see a ginger with a big, red dog at 5:30 a.m., that’s me! **Favorite local race? Laufenfest and Brew Mile—you cannot beat a race with beer waiting for you! **Favorite race outside of the Tri-State? I’ve been fortunate enough to run a multitude of difference races. I absolutely love the Copenhagen, Denmark half marathon. It’s in August, the start time is at 11 a.m. and the temp doesn’t get above the 60’s throughout the race. You run past old churches, the water front, the palaces…it’s beautiful. I also ran and enjoyed the AleSmith Brewery 5.5k in San Diego. It starts at AleSmith brewery and passes two other breweries where you can get free samples. I also finished the race with a custom growler, a bomber of beer, and two free beer tokens. **Farthest you have traveled to do a race? Copenhagen, Denmark **Favorite race distance? Anything between a 5k-10K race is my best competitively. **Favorite race memory? This past November I ran my second full marathon. My fiancé, Chris, road over 24+ miles on a bike to see me. My friend Jenny drove up to Indy from Evansville just to see me run. I got to see her four times the second half of the full marathon. My mom and my sister were live-tracking me on the app and messaging me and encouraging me. It felt amazing to know so many people were cheering for me! **Funniest race memory? Spectators were serving PBR at a table during the Monumental Full Marathon. At mile 12, I absolutely helped myself – I am the Brew Queen – and only regret not saving more for the rest of the race! **Craziest thing you saw at or during a race? There was a race on Riverside drive where a couple of people were dressed in firefighter gear running. It was a summer race. I have to give them credit for finishing because I can only imagine how HOT they were. **Favorite pre & post-race meal/drink? Before the full marathon, Chris made me stuff my face with this awesome pasta he made so I would have enough carbs to finish. Since I met my goal, he must have done something right! Afterward, we finished with Bloody Mary’s and beer! **What is your favorite brand of running shoe? Brooks. I go back and forth between the Ghost and the Glycerin. **How many miles do you run a week? Around 25 when I’m not full marathon training. **What are your future goals for running? Honestly, my goals are to get back to the real reason why I love running – the time when it’s just my dog, Maris, and me – when there are no time constraints, no people on the road, any deadlines or stress. Running for you, and for only you, is the best thing in the world. **Favorite time of day to run? I work all day. So if I do not get up at 5am to run, it will not happen. Now, with the sun just coming up when we finish, with only a few people on the street, it really is cathartic to think it’s only us out there. **Favorite weather to run in? WINTER!!! **Music or no music? When I race, I listen to music or a podcast. But during the week when I run with Maris, I do not need music. Looking out for squirrels or bunnies is distraction enough! Congrats to the November Ultimate Fit Runner of the Month Chastity Hertel! She is 42 years old and moved to Evansville in 1996. See below for more on Chastity...
**What motivates you to run/walk? I love to run because it allows you to challenge yourself and to do a lot of thinking while you are out there beating the pavement. In addition, I enjoy the friendships I have made since starting to run. **How many races have you participated in? 26 this year and this is my first year of running since years ago in my school days **What age did you start running/walking for fun & competitively? I ran back years ago in school, but hadn’t ran for years until last year around late October early November at the age of 42. **Favorite place to run/walk? I don’t have a favorite place to run, however I do love to run in a lot of out of town races, because it allows me to meet people I would not have normally crossed paths with had I not entered these events. In addition, I love to see new places and running in various states allows me to do just that. **Favorite local race? The New Harmony Trail Run Half Marathon **Favorite race outside of the Tri-State? The Detroit Free Press Half Marathon that goes from downtown Detroit across the Ambassador Bridge into Canada **Farthest you have traveled to do a race? Canada **Favorite race distance? My favorite distance to run is the half marathon. **Favorite race memory? My favorite race memory is not of myself, but of my niece Adrienne Price calling me to tell me she completed her first half marathon at the Evansville Half Marathon this year when I was on my way to run the Detroit Free Press Half Marathon. I am so proud of her for setting a goal and accomplishing it. **Craziest thing you saw at or during a race? I would have to say the craziest thing I have ever saw at a race, was at the Queen Bee Half Marathon. Along the course they have a lot of entertainment and various foods and drinks are offered along the way, of which one of the areas offered hot tea and another offered shots of whiskey. Need I say, I did not partake in either. **Favorite pre & post-race meal/drink? I don’t really eat a lot the morning of a race, I typically just have a banana and a GU Energy gel, the same flavor every time, salted watermelon. **What is your favorite brand of running shoe? Brooks, previously I preferred the Brooks Launch 4, but since the release of the new Brooks Levitate I would say it”s the best shoe I have ever used and I love it. **How many miles do you run/walk a week? I average around 50 miles per week **What are your future goals for running/walking? I have not yet completed a full marathon, my goal is to do so in the spring. **Favorite time of day to run? I don’t have a preference on the time of day I like to run. Sometimes I run mid morning, but more often or not I run in the afternoons. I don’t mind the heat of the day to run because I feel you must be prepared for whatever conditions arise for the run on race day, so its good training to practice even in the heat of the day. **Favorite weather to run in? I don’t have a preference on the temperature of the days I run. As stated above, I feel you must be prepared for whatever conditions arise for the run on race day, so it’s good training to run in all different temperatures of weather. **Music or no music? I prefer to run with music Congrats to Ravonda Murphy for being named the Ultimate Fit Walker of the Month for October! Here is more of her story...
"I am 58 years old. I grew up in the country just outside of Newtonville, IN which is a few miles south of Santa Claus. My husband, Mike, and I have been married 32 years and we have lived in Evansville all but 4 of these years. We have two adult kids; Devin 30 and Tim 27. I was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma in November 2009. I had six cancer surgeries in 6 years. Right now, I have been NED (no evidence of disease) for two years. I continue to get scanned every three months because my cancer is known to keep coming back. I quit work after my sixth surgery and now use that time to exercise and take care of myself. I decided to train for a half marathon after my physical therapist said it would be a good challenge for me." What Motivates you to run/walk? I found after I started training for the half marathon that I enjoyed walking and getting the fresh air. When I first started training I struggled to walk a mile. It inspires me to see how far I have come in the last two years. I want to keep walking and keep challenging myself. How many races have you participated in? 7 What age did you start running/walking for fun and competitively? When I was 20 I started running every morning. It didn’t last long. I had trouble breathing while running and gave it up. After I was diagnosed with cancer I started walking a little to try to build up strength. I really didn’t start to train to be competitively until I was 56. All I do is walk now. My arthritis and neuropathy from chemo does not allow me to run. Favorite place to run/walk? The USI to Burdette trail. Depending on how I’m feeling that day. I can choose to tackle the hills or walk on the flatter part. Favorite local race? Definitely the Evansville half marathon. Farthest you have traveled to do a race? All of my races have been here in Evansville. Favorite race memory? Finishing the Evansville half marathon on October 1, 2016. I had family and friends there to watch me finish and so many of my Team 13 friends came back to walk in with me as I finished the race. I had been going through chemotherapy in during most of my training and I had so many people supporting me to finish this race. Funniest race memory? I’m going to go with most serious instead of funniest. I was having trouble with walking three miles without resting. On the morning that I was to walk 4 miles for the first time I prayed to God if I was to continue training for the half marathon to please help me get through the 4 miles that morning. I did all four without stopping to rest. I at that point knew I would make it to the half marathon. Favorite pre & post-race meal/drink? I’m not competitive enough to have a pre-race meal. I am a water drinker. I drink water before, during, and after a race. I have started drinking a bing energy drink before I walk and try to have Gatorade on hand too. What is your favorite brand of running shoes. Asics. They fit my narrow feet. How many miles do you run/walk a week? Most weeks I try to walk 15-20 miles. I hope to keep building on that. What are your future goals for running/walking? I just want to keep walking for health. Hopefully, I will eventually speed my time up a little. Favorite time of day to walk/run? I like to walk of the mornings. It is so refreshing and energizing. Favorite weather to walk in. Sunshine and 70’s. Music or no music? No music. I usually walk with a friend so we are talking. If I walk by myself, it is a great time to just let my mind roam. Congrats to Scott Culiver for being named the September Ultimate Fit Runner of the Month! Scott is 56 years old and was born and raised in Evansville. He gets to do a job he loves everyday, a computer nerd for over 30 years. He also has 2 grown kids.

Post race chocolate milk 14. **What is your favorite brand of running shoe? Brooks **How many miles do you run/walk a week? I have so many great memories of racing with friends **Funniest race memory? Watching my running buddy stop and drink beer during my first full marathon. **Craziest thing you saw at or during a race? Watching a guy stand behind a tree and thinking he was out of sight…….then watching the race turn around the corner and he was in front of everyone. LOL Funny for us not so much for him. **Favorite pre & post-race meal/drink? I eat whole wheat pasta with butter and cheese night before races then after a race a cold beer and cheeseburger and fries hits the spot. **What is your favorite brand of running shoe? I’ve run in Mizuno Wave Inspires for years **How many miles do you run/walk a week? My mileage varies based on what I’m training for but minimal of 15 up to 30ish. I want to run a few halves a year and 2 or so triathlons until I can’t. **Favorite time of day to run? Early Mornings **Favorite weather to run in? Love the Fall when its cool **Music or no music? Never got into the earbuds but I LOVE music at races to pump me up. Congrats to Rhonda Trail for being named the Ultimate Fit Walker of the Month for July! She is Mom to Christopher and Chelsea, favorite mother in law to Sarah, grandma to Reagan and mom to my adopted dog, Lucy. She works in HR at the Ford Center. She is from Posey County, but now resides in Vanderburgh. As many of you know, she has been the photographer for countless races in the Tri-State area!
Here is the nomination email we received: "Rhonda has competitively walked many 5K's in the past and won awards in her age group. She is always encouraging runners and walkers on the course. But as you (and most of the Evansville area running/walking community) know, Rhonda is an extraordinary race photographer. Her photographs of runners and walkers are of the highest quality, and almost magically, capture the essence of the sport: the joy and relief of crossing the finish line; the camaraderie before, during, and after the race; the remarkable grace of the human body in motion. Her poignant images of runners and walkers in action are vividly framed by the beautiful, isolated, or busy settings of the Midwest: the Ohio River, a city street lined by store fronts, a trail in Angel Mounds, thriving corn fields. Rhonda is an artist with a camera. She not only sees Nature and people with remarkable clarity. She captures and preserves the spirit of the moment and the place. Her photographs tell us so much about who we really are. Her pictures are something special. And so is Rhonda." **What motivates you to run/walk? My health, inspiration to my family to get involved in health and fitness and the challenge of being faster than yesterday **How many races have you participated in? A bunch. 125-150 **What age did you start running/walking for fun & competitively? I started walking at 30. Watched all the runners go by and thought if I run, I could get to the finish line sooner, so shortly after beginning, I started running. I don’t think I ever walked just for the fun of it only. I’m competitive and like to win, although I know I’m not fast and there are better walkers out there. Born with club foot and lucky that I can run in the first place, my running days are now over, due to a metal plate being surgically placed in my right foot 2 years ago. I can walk almost as fast as I sometimes ran, but don’t tell my doctor that! **Favorite place to run/walk? Burdette to USI **Favorite local race? The Mesker Park Zoo race. I started that one in 2009 and it’s still going! **Favorite race outside of the Tri-State? The Peachtree 10K Road Race in Atlanta. Over 50K participants! **Farthest you have traveled to do a race? Las Vegas **Favorite race distance? A 10K **Favorite race memory? The Bear. It’s a 5 miler up Grandfather Mountain in NC. Crossing the finish line was the best! **Funniest race memory? Probably when Chelsea and I were race walking at the Laufenfest. We had always walked competitively against each other. During one race, I was ahead of her and had a good lead until I turn around and she is kind of limping. I slowed to ask what was wrong. Apparently nothing much because she passed me and I wasn’t able to catch her. She beat me! It was funny between us and I am still waiting for a redo so I can prove to her that I am faster! **Craziest thing you saw at or during a race? A naked woman in an alley **Favorite pre & post-race meal/drink? I drink water before, but don’t eat. After is a banana and then a good salad with chicken is a favorite **What is your favorite brand of running shoe? Brooks at Ultimate Fit **How many miles do you run/walk a week? Right now I am around 15 a week **What are your future goals for running/walking? To complete what I started when I could run, which is 50 runs (now walks) in 50 states. I am hoping to finish SC this fall which will be 23 total. **Favorite time of day to run? 6 pm’ish **Favorite weather to run in? Hot. Although it’s harder, I feel accomplished when I’ve lost a gallon of sweat after a hard walk. **Music or no music? None. I am deaf in one ear so I am constantly watching around me. There is not way I would attempt to use music. When I could hear, I did use music and I was always faster! Congrats to Shari Kirkpatrick as she is the Ultimate Fit June Runner of the Month!
Shari is married and has 2 children and 4 grandchildren. She started running as a support to a friend. She also started getting involved in volunteering for the Y and discovered that her gift was not running, but it was in leading, coaching, and inspiring. Anywhere outside, but I do enjoy the challenge of the west side hills and I also enjoy the Boulevards on the east side. Favorite local race? There are many. For short distance, I would say the Turkey Day 5k. It is the most casual and family oriented event. The Evansville Half Marathon – I have been part of that race since the first one, so I am partial to that. The Evansville River Run from Henderson to Evansville is also a fun community race! Favorite race outside of the Tri-State? The Flying Pig in Cincinnati – The whole community supports the race. It is tough but fun! Farthest you have traveled to do a race? San Diego California Favorite race distance? Half Marathon Favorite race memory? So many….Crossing my first full marathon with two of my best friends hand and hand. Funniest race memory? I laugh at every race I go to. I find the fans to be very funny. St. Louis had a fan that was that cow bell guy off of Saturday night live. My running partner had to get a picture with him! Craziest thing you saw at or during a race? Anyone that runs in full costume in a race…they all qualify. Favorite pre & post-race meal/drink? Pre race is Oatmeal or Bagel post-race favorite is chocolate milk What is your favorite brand of running shoe? Brooks! How many miles do you run/walk a week? Cold Music or no music? Talking all Talking Tony Miksanek was born in Chicago, Illinois but has resided in southern Illinois (Benton, population 7,100) since 1983. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in Biological Sciences and received his MD from the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. A small town family doctor for more than 25 years, Tony has also worked at the University of Illinois Student Health Center, taught Anatomy and Physiology at the junior college level, and published many medical articles, essays, reviews, and short stories. He is married to Arlene (for 36 years) and has 3 children and 3 grandchildren.
**What motivates you to run/walk? Enjoyment, Fitness, Challenge, Camaraderie **How many races have you participated in? Lots. I haven’t actually counted them but 700 is a reasonable estimate. **What age did you start running/walking for fun & competitively? I started Race Walking in 1999. Before that, I was seriously into Sprinting (100, 200, 400 meter dash) and doing USATF Masters Track throughout the Midwest. As I got older and slower and accumulated more injuries (two stress fractures, torn hamstring), walking seemed like a better, safer option. **Favorite place to run/walk? Pretty much anywhere. We have a nice middle school track and community college track. The surface is easy on the feet and spine. No traffic or stray dogs. **Favorite local race? That’s like asking, “Who’s your favorite child?” We are fortunate to have so many wonderful Evansville/Newburgh races to choose from. **Favorite race outside of the Tri-State? Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend. It’s Disney World – need I say more? **Farthest you have traveled to do a race? Disney World, Florida **Favorite race distance? All of them. I like the variety – speed vs endurance. **Favorite race memory? Completing my first Marathon in 2003. That was a strange mix of pain + exhaustion + ecstasy + spirituality **Favorite pre & post-race meal/drink? Banana (pre-) and if we’re in Evansville, definitely Baskin-Robbins chocolate fudge ice cream (post-) **What is your favorite brand of running shoe? Brooks (for training and distances of Half Marathon and beyond), ASICS (for Race Walking) **How many miles do you run/walk a week? Pretty consistently 20 miles per week, obviously more when preparing for a Half or Full Marathon. As you age, it’s a bit of a balancing act – train hard but try to avoid overuse injuries. **What are your future goals for running/walking? Keep going. I have a small sign in front of our treadmill machine that reads, “Go for Broke.” That essentially sums up my athletic career, past and present. **Favorite time of day to run? Anytime **Favorite weather to run in? The hotter the better. Seriously. Genevieve Perry is the Ultimate Fit Runner of the Month for April! She currently lives in Evansville, IN.
