Congrats to the November Ultimate Fit Runner of the Month, Gina Dupps! Here is more on Gina:
"My name is Gina Dupps and I am 55 years old. I live in Oakland City, and have for most of my life. I graduated from Wood Memorial High School and the University of Southern Indiana. I have taught at Francisco Elementary School for 31 years. I’ve taught 6th grade for 26 years, and previously taught 1st and 3rd grades. I’ve coached cheerleading, volleyball, a little tennis, and track. The funny thing is while I was coaching I wasn’t active at all. I didn’t become active until I was in my mid forties, and didn’t start running until I was 50. I started taking zumba and doing Jillian Michaels DVDs at about age 46. The only other active thing I had done was walk a couple of miles a day. Since then, I’ve lost 100 pounds, mostly kept it off, and now teach Zumba and run races . There isn’t a day where I don’t do something active." What motivates you to run/walk? I began running when a friend and I were walking back from an event and she said “Let’s run Gina”. I responded with “I don’t run!” She said “RUN GINA” LOL! I did, and I didn’t die. Then I decided to walk a 5k with another friend of mine, and she told me we were going to run UP the hills and walk down them. I did that and didn’t die. After that, I did Couch to 5k to work up to being able to run an entire race. Then, I signed up for a 4 mile run on the 4th of July with friends, and decided to very slowly jog. When I made it to each mile marker jogging, I just kept on going. I finished 4 miles and placed 3rd in my age group. I was hooked on races! I’m a little different from most runners in that I hardly ever run on my own. I run a lot of races by myself, but if there isn’t a shirt, number, snack, and there aren’t people cheering…. I don’t really run. How many races have you participated in? Wow! I’m sure over 100. In the beginning, my goal was once a month and I didn’t hit that for a couple of years. Since then, I probably do at least 2 a month, sometimes way more. I have certain races I love to do, and I sign up for those every year. I also love doing obstacle course type runs. I’ve done 3 Warrior Dashes, the Rugged Maniac, and a few mud runs. Those are fun because I like the obstacle courses. They are super challenging. What age did you start running/walking for fun & competitively? I started at age 50. Before that, I had volunteered for a couple of local races. I was intimidated to try it on my own. I thought that since I wasn’t really a runner, I wouldn’t fit in. I was surprised to find out that everyone is welcome to participate no matter the fitness level, and all of the people involved were friendly and glad to have you there! I’ve met so many people at races! I think it’s better that I’ve gone to most races on my own, because it forces me to step out of my box. Favorite place to run/walk? I really love all the places I run. I have come to enjoy Garvin Park and it wasn’t my favorite at first. I LOVE running the Indy MIni and going through Indianapolis and the Motor Speedway. I’ve enjoyed running the night series at Angel Mounds even though it scares me to death!! The Chilly Hilly and the USI Series are fun and challenging too! Favorite local race? Wow! We have so many great local races. I truly can’t pick one! Favorite race outside of the Tri-State? The Indy Mini for sure! Farthest you have traveled to do a race? I just completed the Disney Wine and Dine, so Orlando, Florida. That was a fun atmosphere! Favorite race distance? I enjoy longer races for the challenge, but I really prefer a 5k. Favorite race memory? My favorite race memories are crossing the finish line at half marathons. It always makes me emotional. Funniest race memory? Oh my, running in that stinkin’ Patriot race in the rain. Everyone was soaked, and there was lightning, but we had no choice but to finish! Also, I’ve done a couple in January that were FREEZING!!! Craziest thing you saw at or during a race? I see lots of crazy costumes that are fun. Favorite pre & post-race meal/drink? I only eat a banana before, sometimes a granola bar, after races, I want lots of water. What is your favorite brand of running shoe? Brooks Glycerin I love the Ultimate Fit, they are sooooo helpful and friendly!! How many miles do you run/walk a week? I guess it depends on which races I’ve done that week! Last week it was 6.2, this week will be 17. What are your future goals for running/walking? I want to continue to run as I get older. I’d love to do more races in different state. The half in Louisville in the spring and the Rock and Roll in Nashville are on my list. Also, I’ve been saving race shirts to make myself a tshirt quilt, so I hope to do that soon! LOL Favorite time of day to run? Early morning, although I like the Sunday afternoon runs too. Favorite weather to run in? I prefer cooler weather even cold. Music or no music? UHHH ALWAYS MUSIC! LOL

Congrats to the October Ultimate Fit Runner of the Month, Janet Hortin! Janet and her husband Kent live in Henderson, KY. Although she runs in a lot of local events, her job has her traveling a lot lately. Luckily, she gets to run in events while on the road for work! Here is a little more about Janet:
What motivates you to run? I’m just trying to stay healthy – running helps the metabolism and stress too How many races have you participated in? 140 in 4 ½ years What age did you start running/walking for fun & competitively? I was 51 when my boss offered to pay my entry fee if I wanted to do the River Run – I hadn’t run competitively since High School. Then I was hooked – I enjoy the socializing and I definitely push myself harder than if I just run on my own. Favorite place to run? I like to experience different courses – I complain about the hills but I do like to be challenged. Favorite local race? There are so many – the Blazin Glazin was fun and I really enjoyed the Run the Vineyard – Run with the Yeti is always fun too! Favorite race outside of the Tri-State? I’ve done 3 at Disney which are very well done – I also like the Hot Chocolate 15K in St. Louis Farthest you have traveled to do a race? Disney’s private island when we went on a cruise for my birthday earlier this year Favorite race distance? I participate mostly in 5Ks but I like to do a longer distance now and then. Favorite race memory? The first year when my son and I did the River Run – it felt Runderful!! Funniest race memory? The local man who is the Elvis impersonator – ‘thank you very much’ Craziest thing you saw at or during a race? At the Disney Princess Half Marathon – it’s amazing how many are dressed in tutus and tiaras – it was really a lot of fun! Favorite pre & post-race meal/drink? Post race – water and then stop and pick up Subway on the way home What is your favorite brand of running shoe? Saucony or New Balance How many miles do you run/walk a week? 15-20 usually What are your future goals for running/walking? I’ve run in 10 states plus Disney’s private island – I’d like to run in more states. Favorite time of day to run? I like mornings best when my schedule permits Favorite weather to run in? temperature 50-60 without precipitation Music or no music? No music Congrats to Kristy Wagner for being named the September Ultimate Fit Runner of the Month! Kristy is 47 years old with two children. Earlier this year, she was blessed with a wonderful granddaughter. Kristy is also lucky enough to have a tremendous year round training partner who keeps pushing her to get stronger and faster. She works as a coatings chemist at Red Spot Paint and was born in Jasper, IN. She has lived in Evansville since 2001.
What motivates you to run/walk? I love the health aspects that I get from running, but I really enjoy running with and meeting new people (at races, training runs or even just fellow runners on the street / Greenway). But really, there is nothing better than seeing someone conquer a distance that he or she did not think was previously possible. And if I can help motivate and encourage that person in any way possible, then that completely makes my day. I also love the camaraderie of the running / walking communities. I know of no other sport where there is so much building each other up, rather than bringing others down. When we help each other, everyone wins. How many races have you participated in? (Estimate if needed) Around 110 – and counting What age did you start running/walking for fun & competitively? I ran one year of track in high school and then stopped running until I was in my late 30s. I picked it back up to help alleviate stress and pass the time while waiting for my kids to finish afterschool activities. I entered my first race in 2011 – the Evansville Mesker Zoo race and have been adding more races every year. Favorite place to run/walk? Love the USI / Burdette Greenway, especially in the spring and fall. The Cultural Trail in Indy is pretty nice as well. Favorite local race? So many to choose from, but I guess I would have to say it is a tossup between the Mesker Zoo 5K and the USI Night Flight. Mainly because they are so different from the other races that I do. Favorite race outside of the Tri-State? Indy Mini Half Marathon. It is an amazing feeling running with 30-40,000 other runners / walkers. Plus there is constant entertainment / encouragement along the course. Farthest you have traveled to do a race? Indianapolis Favorite race distance? 5K – the pain is over quicker Favorite race memory? Crossing the finish line at last year’s Evansville Half Marathon breaking my PR (that I had just set in May at the Indy Mini a few months earlier). Funniest race memory? It wasn’t funny at the time, but during a training run, it started to “lightly” hail (about pea sized). We continued running, but the hail turned golf ball sized and a torrential down pour to boot. We ended up huddled behind a tree (and that’s generous on the description; it was more like a sapling) on St. Joe Avenue trying to avoid getting pelted by the hail and the raging river that used to be the sidewalk. I ended up with a half dozen bruises on my arms and legs by the time it was done. I’m sure we looked quite pathetic to anybody who happened to drive past. Craziest thing you saw at or during a race? I believe it was the Jingle Bell 5K, but a gentlemen was “running” it on skies – there was no snow on the roads… Favorite pre & post-race meal/drink? Pre-race: English muffin with peanut butter and a banana. Post race: Anything that goes with beer or wine What is your favorite brand of running shoe? I am definitely a Brooks Glycerin type of girl. I’ve tried others, but these work best for my running style. How many miles do you run/walk a week? 16-22 miles What are your future goals for running/walking? To still be able to run when I’m in my 70s and 80s or older (God willing)! Favorite time of day to run? Late afternoon / early evening – if it isn’t too hot / humid! Favorite weather to run in? Distances over 6 miles: 40◦. I do have to say there is something special about running when it is snowing (as long as there is no ice on the trail), but I also can really appreciate running in 75◦ and a gentle rain. So, basically, anything under 80◦ and low humidity Music or no music? When I run by myself (which isn’t very often anymore), I like music. But never when I am running with my group of peeps. Congrats to the August Ultimate Fit Runner of the Month, Madison Rahschulte. Although she is from Lawrenceburg, she is no stranger to Tri-State road races. Madison completed her goal of running a race in all 92 Indiana counties in June! For those who would like to hear more about her story, she will be a guest speaker at the Tri-State Fitness Rewards Banquet Presented by Ultimate Fit in January 2019. Until then, here is a bit more on Madison and also please click the button below to see her complete list of races ran in!
Provide a few sentences about yourself I am 13 years old and I live in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. I attend St. Lawrence School and will be going into the 8th grade. What motivates you to run/walk? My family. How many races have you participated in? (Estimate if needed) 167 (as of 7/15/18) What age did you start running/walking for fun & competitively? Started running at 8 for fun and competitively at 9 years old. Favorite place to run/walk? Local park by our house Favorite local race? Brookville, Indiana (part of our local circuit) Favorite race outside of the Tri-State? My favorite so far has been Run the Ravine in Reelsville, Indiana. This was a fun trail race. Farthest you have traveled to do a race? I have ran races while in Tennessee, Montana, and Florida while on vacation. But the furthest that I have traveled specifically for a race is about 4 hours (within the state of Indiana). Favorite race distance? My favorite races right now are 5Ks, but I have ran 10Ks and a 15K. Favorite race memory? Me and this guy (Lester from the county Turkey) went out really fast during a race (there was a 5K and a 10K). We didn’t notice that we missed the first turn on the course for the 5K, but continued following the arrows on the road. We didn’t know they were for the 10K. Police were blocking the roads and volunteers were at the corners of the streets so we didn’t think there were any problems until we were about 3 miles in and we weren’t close to the start/finish line. So, we ended up finishing the race….and, we ended up 1st male/female of the race. Funniest race memory? I am relatively small and only 13 years old. So, I often get told to move to the back of the line when the race is getting ready to start. (With 57 overall female race wins, I know stay towards the front.) Favorite pre & post-race meal/drink? Bananas and water How many miles do you run/walk a week? 20ish Favorite time of day to run? Early in the morning or late at night Favorite weather to run in? Cool or warm with a breeze Music or no music? No music .

She lives in Henderson, Kentucky and is an 8th grader at North Middle School. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, working out, swimming, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and of course running! Here is a little more about Alyssa: What motivates you to run/walk? It depends. I always enjoy running but a little extra motivation whatever it may be always helps. How many races have you participated in? 100’s What age did you start running/walking for fun & competitively? My first 5k was at 6 years old. Favorite place to run/walk? Audubon Park Trails Favorite local race? The 12k’s of Christmas Farthest you have traveled to do a race? Lexington, KY for the State Cross Country Meet for Henderson County High School. Favorite race distance? I have not done much past a 12 K but the longer the better. Favorite race memory? Winning overall female at the the longest race I have ever run on my first time (12K's of Christmas). Funniest race memory? Racing with my brother on the Run with the Yeti trail and him getting scared by the Yeti. Craziest thing you saw at or during a race? When I am running I have my blinders on and don’t pay much attention to what is going on around me but the craziest experience was the storm during the Patriot Race 2 years ago. Favorite pre & post-race meal/drink? Spaghetti What is your favorite brand of running shoe? Brooks (only from Ultimate Fit) How many miles do you run a week? 30-40 miles a week depending on training schedule What are your future goals for running/walking? Short term goal is to break 21:00 by the end of this year. Continue to qualify for state meets in track and cross country. Qualify for New Balance Nationals and Kentucky Dream Mile Favorite time of day to run? Early Morning Favorite weather to run in? Cold Music or no music? No music, too distracting. Congrats to our Ultimate Fit June Runner of the Month, Samantha Houchin. She was born and raised in Ferdinand, IN and currently lives on the west side of Evansville with her 2 female lab mixes. She also has a boyfriend named Nick. Their dogs Avery and Lily are 1 year old littermates that were adopted from It Takes A Village. They love to run/walk with her daily. Samantha is 28 years old (but her b-day is June 27th so almost 29!). She currently works as a dental hygienist in Evansville. Here is a little more about Samantha! What motivates you to run/walk? The health benefits, stress relief, socialization, runner’s high, and the enjoyment of being outside are what motivate me to run. I’m competitive with myself and I love setting goals at the beginning of each year and training to obtain them. How many races have you participated in? I have ran in probably 50+. I love signing up for races because it keeps me motivated during training. What age did you start running/walking for fun & competitively? 23 is when I decided to start running and training for a half marathon Favorite place to run/walk? Evansville and Newburgh downtown riverfronts because of the views and the pups get to see so many people. Favorite local race? Evansville Half Marathon because there’s always people with music and dancing and cheering you on. I love reading all the funny signs people make. Everyone is so happy and motivating. Favorite race outside of the Tri-State? Indianapolis Monumental Marathon because the crowd was phenomenal. Everyone was screaming and cheering you on and the participants were all really nice to me. Farthest you have traveled to do a race? Indianapolis Favorite race distance? Half marathons are my favorite and then 5ks. I want to be out running for a long time or just sprint and be done quick. Favorite race memory? I have so many favorites. One of them would be when my entire family did the Heartland Half Marathon/5k race together. It was my dad’s first race and he did it seven months after he quit smoking. Funniest race memory? I called Nick crying at mile 17 of my marathon to tell him I was hungry for a cheeseburger. (Someone didn’t pack enough gels to get them through the race) Craziest thing you saw at or during a race? I saw a man run a half marathon barefoot! Favorite pre & post-race meal/drink? My favorite pre-race meal is oatmeal and egg whites. Post-race I love donuts and chocolate milk. What is your favorite brand of running shoe? I don’t have a favorite brand of shoe. I rotate between three pairs- Brooks, Hoka, and Asics depending on the type of run I am doing. How many miles do you run/walk a week? Currently, I am running 25 miles a week. I will increase that by 5 miles each week until my next marathon in November. What are your future goals for running/walking? BQ!!!! I would love to qualify for Boston this Fall, but more realistically I will try to qualify next year for Boston 2020. I also want to get top 10 female overall in the Evansville Half Marathon. Goal for every race-smile and get a killer race photo. Favorite time of day to run? I’m probably the only crazy person that likes running in the afternoon. I’m not a morning runner because it takes my legs forever to wake up and start moving. Favorite weather to run in? I like a sunny 50 degree day with a light breeze. That’s not too much to ask for is it? Music or no music? I started out listening to music, but got bored with it. I switched to audio books that I rent from the library, but then I got scared and nervous on my runs because I would listen to thriller/action books. Now, I run headphone free and take in everything around me. Congrats to Lori Wiechmann for being named the May Ultimate Fit Runner of the Month! She is originally from Michigan and her family was transferred to Newburgh from Alabama 5 years ago for her husband’s job. She is fortunate to be a stay at home mom to her 7 year old son, Liam. They also have 2 very needy labradors that keep them busy!
What motivates you to run/walk? Like many runners, living a healthy active lifestyle is one of my top priorities. I am also very goal oriented when it comes to running/racing. I like to set challenging goals for myself and I enjoy the hard work it requires, both mentally and physically, to meet them! How many races have you participated in? 40ish What age did you start running/walking for fun & competitively? I began running for fun about 10 years ago, but I did not start racing until 2013. New York City, however I will be traveling to Bermuda in January for the Bermuda Half Marathon Favorite race distance? 10 Miler Favorite race memory? Craziest thing you saw at or during a race? People squatting/peeing in the corrals before a race Favorite pre & post-race meal/drink? It all depends on the race length... Night Before – Pizza Pre Race– Peanut Butter Sandwich or Cereal with banana After – Water/Chocolate Milk What is your favorite brand of running shoe? I am loyal to Brooks, yet I am still searching for that perfect shoe! How many miles do you run/walk a week? I typically run somewhere between 30-40 miles each week. What are your future goals for running/walking? My ultimate goal is to stay injury free and run as long as my body allows! A BQ wouldn't be so bad either 🙂 Favorite time of day to run? Early morning as the sun is coming up. Favorite weather to run in? 40-50s and nothing beats a run in the rain on a warm summer day! Music or no music? I listen to podcasts on easy/long runs and music on the speedier days. Congrats to Ebon Ellis for being named the Ultimate Fit April Runner of the Month! He is 24 years old and a dad of two to Isabella and Ebon Jr. He loves being able to put smiles on faces. Here is an excerpt from his nomination: "Ebon is a truly uplifting member of our runner community who reminded me to stop and enjoy and just love. While I can routinely do this during the week on my training runs, it’s a little harder for me to do this in a race as I’m competitive person who wants to continually improve and better her times. I hope to get to know him better this coming year and see him at more and more races. His positivity is contagious!" What motivates you to run/walk?

I have only been running about a year, but I think it is so important for our kids to see a healthy lifestyle, the importance of fitness, and setting an example for them. When I’m running, it’s like nothing else in the world distracts me during that time. I disconnect with the world and relax, listening to my music, running.
